Henry TOGNA

Henry and I worked together for the 3M company in Wigmore St.we became friends and played tennis together at Queens.I chose Aviation as a career becoming a Captain with British Airways losing touch with Henry.Amazingly we met by chance in Barbados about 20 years ago but never met since.
We talked and videod on Whatsap and so sad when he told me of his illness.

Henry was among the luckiest of men, blessed with intelligence, perspicacity, genuine wry wit , impeccable taste and the soul of a bon vivant.
I don't think I saw Henry--whom I called "Hank"--more than half a dozen times in my life, having met him when he owned the hotel on Jermyn Street, but we connected as soul mates immediately.No matter how much time went by our friendship never lost its vigor and it was increased upon meeting his beloved Bibi, who complemented him in myriad ways and a great support to him in his waning days.
Hank had kept me updated on the progress of his treatments but even in his email I could tell his strength was failing. I had so looked forward to a reunion with him as his former healthy self, lifting a glass of Provence rosé over a fine bouillabaisse on some terrace in Monaco. So now, each time I do have a fine meal and a bottle of good wine I shall recall all those times we shared with such a giddy sense of life's purest pleasures.

I first met Henry in 1990 and was immediately struck by his enthusiasm and energy for his 'new' hotel in Jermyn Street, which was probably the first of what we now describe as a 'boutique' hotel. Henry had both great vision and a real passion for people, which led to the hotel's success. I soon learnt that Henry had the same enthusiasm and energy for everything he did. Despite his success, Henry was a very modest man, willing to help and guide those around him. I always enjoyed being in his company and my only regret is that I was not able to see him in his latter years. He will be missed and thoughts are with Bibi, who he always spoke so fondly of.

We were deeply saddened to hear of Henry’s passing and would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to Bibi and Henry’s family.

Henry was truly one of a kind — a unique, kind, and gracious man who left a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of knowing him.

As Chairman of the Jermyn Street Association for many years, he brought wisdom, warmth, and a deep understanding of the street and its community. He had a great appetite for life and for London — its history, hotels, restaurants, and galleries.

Henry’s unmatched spirit, charm, and generosity touched so many lives. I feel we have lost one of the great figures of a more gracious time.

Though I only met Bibi a few times, Henry spoke of her often and with such affection. We hope the many beautiful memories you shared with Henry bring you comfort at this time of loss.

Dearest Henry,
Until we meet again...it was such pleasure knowing you and thank you for all the kindness and joy you always gave to everyone around you. I am sure I speak for so many people that had the privilege of knowing you. Thank you for making the world a kinder and happier place... For now..Rest in Peace.

I was privileged to be part of the opening team at 22 Jermyn St back in 1990. Henry was so kind to the staff a true gentleman.
Working with Henry was always exciting and fun especially when Henry’s father was on hand to help.
The same year Henry arranged a Christmas party at an Italian restaurant in Chelsea to thank the staff.
As expected Lots of fun was had. He paid for everything and insisted on paying each member of staffs taxi fare home. This typifies his kindness and generosity.
You always felt comfortable in his company a diamond of a human being.
